About artist

Biography

After completing a degree in philosophy, Lalita studied at the Vancouver Academy of Art for four years under classically trained instructors. She specializes in oil and is also skilled at acrylics, watercolours, and drawing media. Lalita is most well known for her award-winning figures, portraits, and still lifes. By exploring the human condition through emotive figures and narratives, Lalita's artwork inspires viewers to reflect on who they are, how they relate to their environment and others, and what really matters.

With over thirty-five years teaching experience, Lalita is a well respected teacher, mentor, and art assessor. On account of the success of her contemporary atelier program at her studio in Walnut Grove, Lalita was asked to design the Foundations Program for the Federation of Canadian Artists https://federationacademy.ca/.

Lalita is currently taking her Masters in Counselling Psychology, and is completing her internship at Crossroads Collective in Langley, BC. Please contact their admin for quality counselling at a reduced rate!

Sample community projects include: murals (Burnaby Hospital, Freybe Foods), visual content for virtual reality projects with Banging Rocks, and watercolour paintings used in animations (In Focus Film School)

Lalita is an amateur musician and writer, and she has published articles in several art magazines and periodicals. She is currently inspired by Alain de Botton (philosopher), Carl Jung (psychiatrist), Daniel Goleman (psychologist), and many living visual artists such as Cesar Santos, Banksy, Jenny Saville, George Condo, & Marina Abramovic.

"I paint and teach to gently awaken in myself and others, that which has been lost, hidden or buried."

Art Appreciation

Visual art, whether it be painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, conceptual, graphic design, interior design, and so on, serves a fundamental purpose: to help us become better versions of ourselves.

Art can help us:

  • Identify what is important to us but hard to put into words
  • Remind us that the world is a beautiful place
  • Show us what we need to re-balance
  • Sit with discomfort, and grow
  • Forgive ourselves for falling short
  • Connect with our heart / spirit
  • Sit with emotions and feel without story
  • Provide beauty, joy and hope
  • Express who we are
  • Remind us to be present
  • Appreciate what is
  • Connect with ourselves
  • Connect with others
  • Remind us we are not as alone as we may feel
  • Remember what matters
  • Appreciate the 'ordinary'
  • See something in a new way
  • Question our beliefs and judgments
  • Experience childlike curiosity
  • Understand our own preferences

Lalita is creating a series of videos to help collectors, art appreciators, and artists develop their art assessment skills. Art appreciation becomes a balance between trusting your own interpretation, experience, and feelings, while understanding how to recognize a quality piece of artwork.

To help people practice, Lalita will be providing a series of instructional videos and online art assessment workshops.

Paintings

Lalita has separated her oil & acrylic paintings into two main styles, 'Classical' and 'Jazz'. The former is more traditional, with a tendency toward neutral colours and a soft, blended look, whereas the 'Jazz' paintings tend to have more intense colour, texture and/or expressive brushwork.

A new project is in the works!

"The scariest monsters are the ones that lurk within our souls." – Edgar Allan Poe

Encouraged by her own continued journey, Lalita is taking first steps toward being publicly vulnerable by sharing personal experiences through art and writing. In so doing, she hopes to inspire others to expose, address, accept and release the 'ugly' and 'dark' parts of their personalities in order to turn their suffering into thriving.

"Hi Lalita, I just wanted to take a minute to say thanks for the [critique] workshop. You really did de-mystify the [jurying] process for me and took away that feeling of discomfort..thank you for being so excellent at what you do!!"

“I have learned a great deal while attending Lalita’s art critiques. I understand what I’m looking at so much more and can articulate what I feel about a painting more than I could before. It helps me appreciate different styles as well. I find every session worthwhile and inspiring.”

"Painting in oil has been my practice for more than 20 yrs. I have much to learn, but I am seasoned enough to recognize excellence in mentoring and teaching. Lalita knows her subject broadly and deeply, taking me to new levels of understanding.  The workshop reinforced the vital role both design and composition play in building the foundation of a painting.  Her sense of humour, enthusiasm for her subject and her authentic delivery, held my attention throughout.”

“I was most impressed with the manner of Lalita's instruction and her knowledge about her subject. She really did her homework in providing the students with much written material and copies of every type of art. Really well done. I would recommend her classes to anyone, be they a beginner, an aspiring amateur or a more advanced artist."
