On the way to Derby Reach
One of the key processes I use is to begin with a layer of colour all over the canvas, in this case, alizarin and cadmium red. I continue to paint, and leave areas where the initial colour shows through. To do this successfully requires restraint and planning, and thinking ‘in reverse’; if I paint over a section and later decide I would rather it be the initial colour, I cannot get it back. So this type of painting requires a combination of planning and spontaneity that provides precisely the type of challenge I love.
