Lalita is accepting applications for ongoing atelier-style classes, which involve a systematic approach to learning the fundamentals of painting in traditional methods.  Through a series of demos, exercises, studies, and completed paintings, participants hone their skills with respect to every element needed to make a painting work.  Participants then apply these foundations to their own work, the manner depending on what each artist would like to achieve and which medium will be used.  Class size is restricted to seven students in order to maintain a high standard of instruction and artistic development.

Dates: Mondays from Jan 16th to June 19th, Tuesdays from Jan 10th to June 20th and/or Wednesdays Jan 11th to June 21st, 2017  *Note: All Atelier classes are FULL; however, people on the waitlist are called if a regular participant cannot attend a class.  It is a great way to get your feet wet, and some ideas of what to practice at home.  Please contact Lalita if you would like to be on the wait list.

In order to create a clean, expressive painting, an artist can reduce the amount of ‘mucking about’ in a variety of ways.  The first is to determine the composition and ensure the viewer’s eye will flow well. Second, recognize the patterns of tone and colour.  Third, plan and organize the palette.  Finally, apply paint using the appropriate brush while limiting the number of strokes.  The benefits of doing many small studies using this method include:  simplifying shapes, choosing what is most important and leaving out the rest, spending more time thinking and reflecting, developing one’s ‘mark”, and preventing overworked paintings. Through a series of demos followed by exercises, Lalita will guide participants through 40-stroke studies that can be used as inspiration for larger works to be completed in your studio.
