Workshop about Composition
Sat/Sun Oct 21-22 – South Delta Artists Guild – Composition – 9:30am – 4:30pm Cost: $156.25 members and $195.31 non-members https://southdeltaartistsguild.com/courses/view/id/1928
Description: Strong composition can seem intangible; initially one has to deliberately work at understanding and implementing key design principles, but with attention and practice it will become instinctive. You are likely aware of what it means to use elements of design such as line, shape, value and colour. Perhaps you have a sense of principles of design such as unity, contrast, rhythm, symmetry, and balance. However, few artists use these to their full advantage. By the end of the two days, you will have a deeper and broader understanding of what the various terms mean, why these concepts are important, and how you can apply them to assess and improve the quality of your work. Representational, semi-abstract and abstract works will be discussed.
Note: this course involves practical applications, including assessing photographs and artwork provided by Lalita. No painting supplies will be needed.

Dynamic Composition Workshop – Foundations Program
Sat/Sun Nov 4-5 – Federation of Canadian Artists – Dynamic Composition 9:30pm – 4:30pm at the Steveston Hotel in Richmond https://artists.ca/education/foundations_program
Cost: $220 Members / $270 Non-Members
Description: In a painting, composition generally refers to how the parts of the image relate to each other to create a whole. The way in which a painting is composed and the way in which the painting’s elements work together to form a coherent whole is key to the success of a work of art in conveying its message and visually ‘hanging together’. Few beginning artists use the elements and principles of design to their full advantage. In this informative class, Hamill will provide examples of artists who structured the compositions of their paintings in ways that bring the viewer’s attention to the most important elements of the painting by encoding their work with a series of deliberate or intuited visual messages. Participants will then apply this information to further assess photographs and paintings.
Representational, semi-abstract and abstract works will be discussed.
Note: this course involves practical applications, including assessing photographs and artwork provided by Lalita. No painting supplies will be needed
